Henry John Ebershoff II
Hippensteel Funeral Service & Crematory
822 North Ninth Street
Henry John Ebershoff, II 67, of Lafayette went to be with The Lord God after a brave battle with throat cancer at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2012. Always fun, he kept his humor and quick wit to the end surrounded by his wife Lana, sons Richard II, Scott and Craig. Henry was born in Lafayette on May 6, 1945, the son of the late Richard V. and Sarah Schaaf Ebershoff.
Henry started his athletic career playing basketball for St. Mary's Catholic Elementary School under the tutelage of coach and mentor Joe Heath. He was MVP of the Jeff Booster tournament, which was a city tournament of all of the Lafayette grade schools. Henry went on to play football and basketball at Central Catholic High School and was MVP in each sport under the coaching of close friend Paul Larocca. He graduated from CC in 1963. Henry had quite a few athletic scholarships opportunities for college and finally settled at Purdue. He played football and was injured and could no longer play football but concentrated on basketball. He was captain of the Purdue men's basketball team his senior year, all Big Ten, and was a member of the All Kodak Classic Team. He held various records at Purdue and still holds the individual single season free throw percentage record. In 1988 he was voted into the Silver Anniversary Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Team.
Upon graduation in 1967 from Purdue, he went to work at the family company and Henry went on to be President/Owner of Lafayette Tent and Awning Company, Inc. in 1974. He was a member of the Indiana Manufacturers Association, International Association of Fairs and Festivals, American Rental Association, Downtown Business Member, and Industrial Fabrics Association International. Henry put his heart and soul into his company. He has aided in the mentoring of thousands of young men by teaching them that "there is no substitution for hard work". Lafayette Tent and Awning Company will turn 100 years old in 2013, founded by Henry J. Ebershoff I in 1913 and is a Lafayette landmark.
Henry was a member of St. Mary Cathedral and attended St. Ann's Catholic Church. He was also a member of the John Purdue Club, Moose and Elk Lodges. Henry was a charitable donor to many organizations in the community. He annually attended the Indianapolis 500 race for the past 50 years and only missed one. He enjoyed spending time with his friends at The Pub and Hop's Shawnee Tavern in Lafayette and wintering in the fabulous Florida Keys.
In 2000 he married the former Lana Timmons and she survives. He is also survived by three sons, Richard Ebershoff, II (wife, Janet), Scott Ebershoff, and Craig Ebershoff (wife, Erin), two step-sons, Brandon Blankenship (wife, Heather) and Nate Timmons, his sister Susan E. Ebershoff-Coles (husband, Wayne), and seven grandchildren.
Henry deeply loved his family, his pets Rockie and Izzy, and was loved by many. He will be greatly missed by the many people he touched in his life.
Today, to honor Henry at this sad time, please commit one random act of kindness to another. That was how Henry Ebershoff lived his life.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Almost Home Humane Society and CASA for Kids Tippecanoe County, or the charitable organization of your choice. Peace be with you.
Visitation 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church with Father Dominic Young officiating. Burial to follow at Spring Vale Cemetery. Hippensteel Funeral Home entrusted with care. Share memories and condolences online at www.hippensteelfuneralservice.com
He was a kind gentle man .. May his strengths be forever passed on thru generations after generations.

Lana...I am older that you and can tell you how much you'v touched so many lives. With your bubbly attitude and spunk. Since I started watching you last year the loosing of one's husband...when the love and respect is still there as we can tell it was, my eyes swell with tears knowing one day I will be too just like you, for my husband is the love of my life also. The only reason people are saying bad things is because the are sooooooooooooo jealouse of what you had, for they have never had someone that was as good to them as your husband was. Keep looking up, God truly helps those that help themselves...all of us have missed you being on the youtube..WELCOME BACK...WE MISSED YOU!!!!

Knowing about Henry only through the visits in his company
-where my sister Gisela works for many years-

Dearest Lana: I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of your husband, Henry. I have been looking for your posts often lately and when I didn't see you for so long I knew in my heart that you were in deep sadness. I know you have a strong faith in God and I hope that is a great comfort to you and your family at this time. I remember you telling us how you first met your husband and what he said to you. You always make me laugh. I can't believe how I feel like I know you just from reading your blogs but I truly enjoy you, and I hope you know how many friends you have made by just being your sweet self. Take good care of yourself and in time I hope to hear from you again as you start your journey on the path to healing. And although you must make this journey by yourself, you are not alone.

My condolences to Lana and family at the passing of Henry. I remember when he was coaching basketball at CCHS. He was one of the people instrumental in keeping the doors of CC open when the Bishop wanted to close it. Thank you, Henry, and may your soul rest in peace. You are missed by many people. I am sorry that I could not be at the funeral Mass or visitation, but hope this note will express my thoughts and prayers for his family members at this time.

To all of you that loved Henry:
I thank you.
Your beautiful words of love and kindness have made this last week a bit more bearable. I always knew how wonderful he was but didn't know ALL of you did as well. Every person that would stop me to tell a story of Henry's kindness to them or a funny one-liner he had come up with I will hold dear to me forever.
Henry was and always will be my best friend and when he died, he took the best part of me with him.
Where do I begin?
I thought we were going to win. We sure tried. You were so brave.
As I said my last goodbyes to you, I left your face wet with my tears that will be with you thru eternity. Your loving heart I will take with me until we lie together once more. YOU are the best part of me.
I learned so much from you. Since you've been gone when I struggle with a problem, I just say to myself "How would Henry want me to do this?" and it seems to solve itself.
I have had so many people tell me that you told them over the years that I am the love of your life. Well, you ARE my life and I miss you more than I ever dreamed possible.
Sleep easy, My darling.
I will make you proud. You have always made me proud.
You are gone but will never be forgotten. You live in every life you touched and there were many.
I Love You

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Henry's life. Knowing about Henry only through the wonderful things Lana has shared about him, the pure joy he brought to the lives around him - especially Lana's - was obvious. What a wonderful legacy to leave behind and, to Henry's family, my prayer is that this joy continues to shine bright in your lives. So many people in the online community, all over the world, are mourning with you today.

The world has lost an extraordinary man. I was fortunate enough to meet Henry at my very first MAFE convention as I tagged along with Barb Kolm as she placed the order for tents for the Berrien County Youth Fair. His smile just put you at ease and you just knew you were in good hands. He has passed that same quality onto his sons and he will forever live within them.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the family he lives behind.

Tn A series of events and good fortune put me in possession of an original picture of SECRETARIAT along with the autographs of the owner (Penny Chenery) and Hall of Fame jockey (Ron Turcotte). I happened to run into Henry the night I returned from Churchill Downs with the freshly autographed picture. Henry was so impressed that I asked if he wanted a copy..he said "YES". On DERBY DAY Henry came into HOP'S to watch the races and I gave him a matted and framed picture. He wanted to know what he owed me...I said NOTHING....he wanted to know WHY... I said you've been through so much during the past several months that I simply wanted to do something nice for you..his eyes watered up and between Henry ,Hop and I we barely made it through the event without crying. Two weeks later Henry came into Hop's and handed me an envelope...inside was a gift card for 100 dollars to Hour Time. I asked Henry what this was for...he said I simply wanted to do something nice for you .It was virtually impossible to out give Henry. He was so good at it . I only knew Henry for a short time...MY LOSS..but knowing him at all was a HUGE GAIN . In the book of JAMES it says and I take a little liberty with my own interpretation , life is like a mist , a whisper in the wind , we're only here for a moment and then gone ... the good news is we'll all be together again REAL SOON . GOD BLESS HENRY and all that he touched...PERSONAL MESSAGE TO HENRY..."COME ON WIRE" !!! ALAN BURGE

Lana, Rich, Scott, Craig and Family:
What a huge loss to this community. Many have said it before me, but he was a great man and a wonderful friend and mentor to so many. He raised 3 wonderful young men and I know that you will all miss him so much. Lana, I still remember seeing you and Henry at the Hour Time on Jim's birthday and Thanksgiving day, the Thursday before he passed away. It meant so much to me to have the kind words that Henry and you said to us that day, knowing how sick Jim was and the bad news that we had just received. I still have the plant on my desk at LUM that you sent when Jim passed away. It reminds me daily of the kindness shown by a very special person and how very blessed I have been to have known such a wonderful family. I know what you are feeling at this time, Lana. It is never easy to lose your best friend. Please know that all of you are in my prayers. May Henry rest in the peace of Christ and may God hold all of you in the palm of His hand.

It doesn't matter if you are a relative, friend, business associate, employee or just some random person on the street, Henry Ebershoff has touched your life one way or another. Our slogan at Lafayette Tent & Awning is Second To None and that is exactly what Henry Ebershoff always will be to me. They don't make men like him anymore. Henry has made a man of me as well as hundreds of other kids that I have seen walk thru that front door at 125 South 5th Street and we should all be thankful we had the pleasure of knowing him. The thing I am going to miss the most is walking in that office and seeing him and having him crack one of his jokes (i.e. The Maple Kind?) or calling in when I am having a tough time and him just making me crack up laughing on the phone. We are all going to miss you Chief, but we will make you proud down at the shop, just keep watching over us and keep us on the right path.
Posted by Keven Denney - Lafayette, IN - Employee LTA June 23, 2012
My son worked for Mr. Henry Ebershoff to put himself through college. He learned many things and the most important of all was
HOW TO BE A MAN.
Henry was like a father to him. He showed him how to give and get respect. How to cope with the problems of life and how to behave like a man should behave. How to lead a crew of men and get the job done and to do it right. Not cut corners but how to be proud of what you did on the job and to do it right the first time.
He taught him that hard work won't kill you and falling into bed all dirty and sore at the end of a long workday gave you a feeling of satisfaction at a job well done.
As a single mother, I could never teach my son these things but Henry Ebershoff gave my son more than his own father did!
I love Henry for that and my son was inconsolable when he heard the sad news of Henry's passing.
If there was ever a manual on how to be a boss, a man, and a great person and do it all with a smile on your face Henry Ebershoff wrote it.
My son was on the verge of getting into trouble when he started at LTA. Henry Ebershoff gave him back to me. He went to work at LTA a punk kid and Henry gave him back to me a MAN. LTA has lost it's best asset
I've never seen a man that got and deserved more respect than Henry Ebershoff. I've said enough through tears at all of our loss of this man.
Mr. Ebershoff, You will be missed by all who knew you.
Posted by Mom June 23, 2012
My son has only referred to two men as "the ole man" - his grandfather who he respected and adored, and, Henry Ebershoff . To him Mr. Ebershoff was a man above reproach and worthy of the utmost respect. You boys have some very big shoes to fill, but from everything I have learned about you all, it will be a task you are all up to. He touched so many lives in so many ways, just as you guys continue to do daily. Just seeing the interaction between you and my son and the other co-workers has been a blessing to me and I am sure it was learned at the feet of your father, such a strong and giving man. Mrs. Ebershoff my thoughts and prayers are with you. With highest regards for your family at this time and in the days to come. Joyce Ramos

You had the kind of marriage most people only dream about. Henry was always the "straight man" to your corny jokes but I saw the laughter in his eyes. He was so proud of you. He loved you more than himself and it showed.
He is no longer in pain and the cancer is finally gone.
He died the way he lived... With Grace and Dignity befitting a true gentleman.
I am a better person for knowing you both.
Reach out to those that love you. Henry would want it that way.
His arms are forever around you my friend.

Henry was not just the tent guy to the Berrien County Youth Fair - he was a business partner and a friend. Since 1975, tents have gone up and down by Lafayette Tent and Awning without a hitch. From Henry to Rich to Scott and Craig, we have had the pleasure of working with this fine family for 37 years and hopefully many, many more. I always looked forward to the MAFE convention to get to spend some time with "Dad". He taught the boys how to work and do business. He had a great smile and hug. I was lucky to follow the friendship he had with my Mom and Dad, so he accepted me by default. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him especially Michigan fairs.

I have so many great memories of Henry. The wonderful vacations in the keys...the facinating way he taught me to fish for barracuda in the "Miss Sally" :)...the wonderful food we had at all the great restaurant we went to. All the laughs, smiles and crazy stories he always told. I will miss his witt, his charm and his way of making everyone around him feel that they were #1. He was the hardest working man I had ever met in my life and amazed me daily. Anyone that knew Henry.......always smiled when they heard his name. He was the most giving man I had ever met. The great wedding Scott and I had in the keys....and the fun we all shared. Since losing my father 30 years ago and knowing Henry knew my father....I always felt He and I shared an unspoken bond... A "fatherly" bond I needed.
My heart aches for his wife and his family he has left behind. We all loved him so much......all in our own way :) I know he is in a better place and I am at ease knowing he is not in any pain anymore.....but it doesn't make it hurt any less. My thoughts and prayers surround him, his memory, his life and all that he stood for. I will never forget your kindness and huge heart. Please tell my dad when you see him that I'm ok and I miss him more that words can say. I love you "Chief" and will miss you for many, many years to come. Peace be with you Henry.
