Francis James "Jim" Haan, 95, of West Lafayette, passed away at 9:12 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at IU Health Arnett Hospital. Born October 3, 1918 in Lafayette, he was the son of the late John Herman and Mary R. (Jenners) Haan. He was a 1936 graduate of Battle Ground High School.
Jim married Martha Alberta "Bert" VanSchepen on November 26, 1941 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Lafayette and she preceded him in death on April 24, 2009. He had farmed all his life in Tippecanoe County and also worked as a carpenter. At one time he drove a school bus for the Tippecanoe School Corporation. He was a charter member of Church of the Blessed Sacrament, a member of the former Pleasant Grove Grange, Battle Ground Steam and Gas Power Association, member of the former Tippewa Model T International, formerly served on the Blessed Sacrament Parish Council, and a former director of Lafayette Co-op Elevator. He was a drummer for the RidgeRunners Square Dance Band for over 30 years. During the Korean Conflict he was a founding member of the Cairo Ground Observer Corps.
Surviving are his three sons, Michael J. Haan (wife, Sandra), John H. Haan (wife, Rosemary), and Dan M. Haan (wife, Connie) all of West Lafayette; three daughters, Mary Lou Corbin and Helen McFadden (husband, Charles) both of West Lafayette and Martha "Marty" Brown (husband, Sam) of Battle Ground; a sister, Barbara Virgin (husband, Barry) of Crawfordsville, IN; and two brothers, Richard V. Haan of West Lafayette and John E. Haan (wife, Theresa) of Lafayette. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Charles Haan, a daughter-in-law Marilyn Haan, a son-in-law William "Bill" Corbin, a great-granddaughter Rachel Ann Gish and a great-great grandson Colten McFadden.
Visitation 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Hippensteel Funeral Home and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Church of the Blessed Sacrament with Father David Buckles and Father Thomas Haan concelebrating. Burial to follow at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Battle Ground Fire Department. Hippensteel Funeral Home is entrusted with care.
