Russell Talbot Gourley, of Lafayette, died Saturday, January 4, 2014 of heart failure. Russell was born in Buck Creek, IN on March 16, 1940 to the late Clarence and Lillian (Gross) Gourley. He was a graduate of East Tipp High School and honorably served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1965.
He worked at Alcoa in Lafayette where he retired after 35 years in 1994. He received the World Safety Award. After taking over the safety program at Alcoa, accidents went from 300 a year to 5. After retiring from Alcoa he became a safety consultant for Oscar Winski Co. in Lafayette, IN. He was a member of the Alcoa Retirees Club and American Legion Post #492 in West Lafayette.
Russell was beloved by all who knew him. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church where he formerly sang in the church choir and where he was married to his high school sweetheart, Marilyn, to whom he was married for 54 years. They have two children, a daughter, Marilyn Herbst-Briar (husband, Brett) of Loogootee, IN and a son, Russell E. Gourley (wife, Tina) of Lafayette. Although he was a foster father to at least 17 children throughout his life, many people considered him father. Russell is also survived by his best friend and brother, Larry Gourley (wife, Carole) of Monticello and three sisters, Ramona Lambert, Clare Brickler and LeEtta Mann all of Lafayette. Also surviving are countless grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Vince Herbst, and a brother, Archie Gould.. Russell's life was an example of selflessness. He was a hero to some and a friend to all.

Visitation from 5-8 p.m. on Friday at Hippensteel Funeral Home with Rosary Service at 5 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church with Father Dan Gartland officiating. Burial to follow at St. Boniface Cemetery with Military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Hippensteel Funeral Home is entrusted with care.
