Dr. Carolyn L. Blue, 65, of Jamestown, NC, formerly of the Greater Lafayette area, passed away at 11:25 a.m. on Sunday, May 12, 2013 in High Point Regional Hospital in High Point, NC. Born January 5, 1948 in Ft. Wayne, IN, she was the daughter of Vera (Walker) Null Hettmansperger of Mulberry, IN and the late Robert Null. Carolyn was a graduate of Dayton High School.
Her marriage was to David L. Blue on July 5, 1969 at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Lafayette and he preceded her in death on September 22, 2008.
She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Ball State University, her Master of Science degree in Health Education/Health Promotion from Purdue University, her Master of Science degree in Community Health Nursing from Indiana University in Indianapolis, her Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Illinois in Chicago, and completed her Postdoctoral Fellowship at Indiana University in Indianapolis.
During her nursing career Carolyn worked as a staff nurse, school nurse, instructor, associate professor in the School of Nursing at Purdue University and research assistant at the University of Illinois at Chicago. At the time of her death she was a professor in the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, NC.
Carolyn loved her garden and landscaping at her home in North Carolina and her small dog named Sissy that she adored. She enjoyed collecting French antiques, and has many pieces of furniture and other items that gave her home an 18th century French countryside theme.
She loved helping in the community. She volunteered at Lafayette Urban Ministry and her expertise in public health nursing enabled her to do great things for those in the community. She was passionate about helping others, and she is one of the few people who found their true calling in life. She loved Cherry Ames books growing up, and that likely sparked her nursing career.
Surviving with her mother are her two sons Patrick Blue of Jamestown, NC and Robert Blue (wife, Emily) of Lafayette; and two brothers Thomas Null (wife, Susan) of Mulberry and David Null (wife, Beverly) of New Zealand.
Services 2 p.m. Thursday at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens Chapel with Rev. Dr. Ronald Wunsch officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Lafayette Urban Ministry or a fund established in memory of Dr. Blue to support PhD students, payable to UNCG with memo to PhD in Nursing Student Scholarship Award Fund, mail to Advancement Services, UNCG, P.O. Box 26170, Greensboro, NC 27402.
