Gordon Taylor McKenzie, 89, of West Lafayette, IN, died at home on Saturday, February 16, 2008. He was born on May 13, 1918, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to the late James F. and Della A. McKenzie. He lived most of his life in Columbus, OH, but upon retirement he and his wife moved to Rotonda West, FL, until they moved to West Lafayette in 2003 to live with one of his sons and family.
He was a 1936 graduate of Springfield (OH) High School and a 1942 graduate of The Ohio State University with a bachelor's of industrial engineering degree. During his freshman year, he was a member of the University baseball team. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1941. On August 30, 1942, he married Betty Joan (Compton) McKenzie who preceded him in death. She is deceased. Shortly after they were married he was drafted into the U.S. Army, went to Officers Training School, and served during WWII as part of the 135th AAA Battalion in the European Theater. He obtained the rank captain prior to discharge. After four years of active duty, he spent another nine years in the Army Reserves.
After discharge from active duty he and his family settled in Columbus, OH, where he worked 35 years for the Armstrong Furnace Company and retired in 1982 when he was the plant engineer. While living in Columbus, he was active in coaching little league baseball and was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.
While living in Florida during retirement, he was an active member of the American Legion Post #113 in Rotonda West, FL, serving several years as the Post treasurer.
He is survived by daughter Joan Lee Santoro (Husband David) of White Hall, MD, and two sons- James F. McKenzie (Wife Bonnie) of Muncie, IN, and Steven P. McKenzie (Wife Dianne) of West Lafayette. He also survived by six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and one great great grandson.
Visitation will be from 10:30 am to 11 am Saturday, February 23, 2008. Memorial service to follow at 11 am at St. Andrew United Methodist Church (4703 N 50 W, West Lafayette, IN 47906), Pastor Tim Burchill officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the McKenzie-Walkup Scholarship at the Ball State University Foundation, 2800 W. Bethel Ave., Muncie, IN 47304; St. Elizabeth Hospice, 1415 Salem St., Suite 202W, Lafayette, IN, 47904; the American Legion, 3436 Indiana Ave., Rotonda West, FL, 33947; Almost Home Humane Society, 1705 S. 2nd St., Lafayette, IN, 47905; or other charitable organizations.
