Leonard R, Czenkusch of Speedway, IN, died at Saturday, July 14, 2012 in his home. He was born April 15, 1926 in South Bend, IN and was the son of the late Louis F. and Theresa M. Johnson Czenkusch. Leonard served in the U.S. Army and as a Pfc. did mop up across the Philippines ending in Mindrano, the staging area for the invasion of Japan. As part of the army of occupation, he went through Hiroshima on a troop train. Leonard became a corporal as a clerk typist before his honorable discharge in 1947. In 1950, he graduated from Purdue University with a BS. in Electrical Engineering. At Purdue he belonged to the Triangle Fraternity. His marriage was to Helen Elizabeth Geyer on December 10, 1950 in South Bend and she survives. Leonard resided in South Bend for 24 years before moving to Speedway where he lived for 49 years.
He was an engineer for Allison Division of GM for 27 years before retiring. In addition, he was on the Speedway Zoning Board of Appeals for 19 years, serving as both Secretary and President. Leonard was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Speedway.
Surviving along with his wife are four sons: James Michael Czenkusch (Janis) of Round Park, TX, Robert Louis Czenkusch of Speedway, IN, John Richard Czenkusch (Toni) of Indianapolis, IN, and David Alan Czenkusch (Nancy) of Loveland, CO. and six grandchildren: Christopher, Brian, Maggie, Katrina, and Kevin Czenkusch and Marge Campbell. Proceeding him in death, along with his parents, is one brother: Edward Louis Czenkusch.
Private family burial will be in The Preserve at Springvale Cemetery, Lafayette, IN. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at 6118 Crawfordsville Road, Speedway, IN. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Speedway, IN, the Triangle Fraternity, Purdue Chapter, or Riley Hospital for Children.
