Wilbur L. "PeeWee" Johnston, 84 of Lafayette, died at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at Cumberland Pointe Retirement Center. Born on November 24, 1927 in Williamsport, IN, he was the son of the late James J. and Ruth (Sweeney) Johnston. He was a 1945 graduate of Williamsport High School. He served in the Navy from 1946 to 1948 and was honorably discharged.
Wilbur married Mary Louise Riley on January 7, 1949 in Attica. She preceded him in death on December 24, 1988. He was a machine operator at Ross Gear/TRW for 30 years and retired in May of 1988.
Wilbur was a member of the VFW#1154 and Moose Lodge. He enjoyed throwing horseshoes, playing softball, playing euchre, and auto racing. He was a NASCAR fan, an avid Chicago Cubs and IU fan. He loved Bobby Knight.
Surviving are his children Glenda Davidson (husband, John) and Linda Habbinga both of Lafayette, Michael Johnston (wife, Ruth) of Pataskala, OH, Janice Davidson (husband, Chuck) of Carmel, IN, and Jeffery Johnston of Yacolt, WA. Also surviving are several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother George William Johnston and a great grandson Chance Habbinga.
Visitation one hour prior to the 2 p.m. funeral service on Monday at Hippensteel Funeral Home, with Pastor Dwight Monical and Pastor James Davidson, Jr. officiating. Burial to follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Association, American Heart Association, or Buck Creek United Methodist Church.
