William E. "Bill" Poelstra, age 92 of Lafayette, passed away at 10:20 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Creasy Springs. Born in New Holland, SD on February 28, 1920, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Agnes (Kooiman) Poelstra. Bill was a Captain in the Army Air Corps during WW II. He piloted B17's and B29's.
On August 22, 1942 he married Eleanor Plantenga in Decatur, Alabama. She preceded him in death on February 26, 2007. He was a tobacco and candy salesman for the Smith Candy Company for 36 years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of Lafayette Christian Reformed Church, a founding member of Lafayette Christian School, and a member of American Legion Post #11. He enjoyed golfing and flying.
Surviving are his two sons, Stanley Poelstra (wife, Nancy) and David Poelstra (wife, Deb) of Lafayette, his daughter, Cheryl Parker (husband, Bruce) all of Lafayette; and his brother, Clarence Poelstra (wife, Della) of Bell Flower, CA. Nine grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Anthony "Tony", and Rex Poelstra, and a sister, Regina Nydam.
Visitation one hour prior to the 2 p.m. funeral service on Monday at Lafayette Christian Reformed Church with Pastor James Busscher officiating. Burial to follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Lafayette Christian Reformed Church or Lafayette Christian School. Hippensteel Funeral Home entrusted with care.
